Robert Warren Smith

Robert Warren Smith was born July 14, 1915 to Mr. and Mrs. S.G. Smith in Jackson, Mississippi, soon afterward they moved to Norphlet, Arkansas. Robert was an outstanding high school football quarterback. He attended Ouachita Baptist College, Arkadelphia, Arkansas on a football scholarship, setting a record for the most passes completed in one game. After graduation in 1939, he coached in schools in Arkansas, one being Warren, Arkansas, where he met and married his wife Helen, on December 21, 1945. As an ROTC graduate he was called immediately to active duty following Pearl Harbor. His first year he was Personnel Officer for the Army War Show, a traveling military show explaining the equipment and use in combat by the military. As a member of the Second Infantry Division, he participated in the “D” Day landing 50th Anniversary and the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from the military as a Major. On return to civilian life, he coached at his Alma Mater, owned the Bookstore on campus, and then decided to resume his education for a higher degree. Upon graduation from the University of Texas, he became a member of the faculty, teaching Accounting and became assistant to the Dean of the College of Business. He retired in 1977, whereupon he and his wife traveled extensively. He loved playing golf and had the humor of making a Hole-in-one at “Ole Muney”. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two older brothers, Fred and Howard Smith. He is survived by his wife, Helen, brother, Oscar Smith of New Braunfels, Texas, sister, Velma Parnell of El Dorado, Arkansas, and many nieces and nephews, whom he loved dearly. Funeral services were 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 6, 2009 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Austin Texas. Graveside services were 2:00PM Wednesday, April 8th in Oakland Cemetery with Rev.
