Funeral Date: 4/1/2009

Obituary:
Urney Alvis “Sandy” Sanders, Jr., age 81, died at home in Conway, AR., on Sunday March 29, 2009. He was born July 29, 1927 in Tinsman, AR. He was preceded in death by his parents Urney Alvis Sanders, Sr. and Lois Peterson Sanders Biggers of Hampton. He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty years, Mildred Ann Baker Sanders; son Boyed Alvis Sanders and wife, Frances, of Conway; daughter Carol Ann Sanders Shockley and husband David of Conway; three grandsons Alexander Alvis Sanders and wife Wendy of Conway; David Brett Shockley and wife Leigh Anne of Arkadelphia; Nicholas Lee Sanders and wife Erin of Conway; great-grandson Cole Alvis Sanders and great-granddaughter, Lily Raine Sanders of Conway. He is also survived by his sisters Jean Sanders Silliman of El Dorado; Patricia Biggers Curtis of Los Angeles, CA.; and Malissa Biggers Crow of Lafayette, IN. and nieces and nephews. Alvis attended Hampton schools, served in the United States Army and was a journeyman ironworker out of Local Union 321 for over fifty years. After their marriage in 1948, Alvis and Mildred lived in many states as they followed his career as an ironworker and later as owner of a construction company. Although they often lived in other states they made many return visits to Ingalls and Hampton and retired to the Ingalls’ home place of Boyed and Cora Baker which has often been the gathering place for family and friends. All of his life he loved hunting and roaming the woods of Calhoun and Bradley counties. Alvis and Mildred made their home in both Ingalls and Conway prior to his death. With Mildred’s loving care, Alvis was able to fulfill his wish to stay in their home during his illness. The family wishes to thank the devoted caregivers from Home Instead and Baptist Health Hospice for their care and kindness. Very special thanks are extended to Dr. Delbra Caradine of UAMS’ Housecalls for the most excellent caregiving and concern she provided. Funeral services were on Wednesday April 1, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Frazer Funeral Home in Warren. Edward Sanders, cousin and friend, of Searcy was the officiant. Active pallbearers were Wayne New, David Marsh, Stan Fitzwater, Dennis Donahou, Henry Purnell, and Bob Spraske. Honorary pallbearers were Pat Hormun, Lloyd Lankford, Scott Corker, David Shockley, Bryce McKinney, and Bo Davis. Memorials may be made to Baptist Health Hospice.

Message: Mr. Sandy has had a very good life and a great family to share it with. I consider mine and Billy Joe's family an extension of the Sander's family. Without Mr. Sandy and Mrs. Mildred's desire and love for the ironworkers, Billy and I would not have the life we have now. Billy has learned alot from Boyed. I always loved listening to Mr. Sandy's stories of "the old days" and hearing Mrs. Mildred laugh about how fast he drove those cars and pulling that trailor. We know where he is and I can't wait to be with him again in heaven. You are all in our prayers.
