Kirby Smith, age90, of Maple Grove died September 25, 2006 at his home. Born September 10, 1916 in Warren, Arkansas a son of the late Myrtle Gladden Smith and Kirby Smith Sr. He attended Chillicothe Business College in Missouri. He married, Patricia Haynes in 1941 and had two sons, Kirby Smith III and William ‘Bill’ Patrick Smith. Kirby joined the United States Navy in June of 1936 and served until 1940. He reenlisted the day after Pearl Harbor and served on the USS Iowa as Chief Storekeeper from January 1942 to December 1945. He also served in the active reserves until 1955. Kirby met his second wife, Mavis Bakken in Minot, North Dakota. They moved to Minneapolis when Mavis’ sister, Jackie, underwent a kidney transplant. After Jackie’s death in 1977, Kirby and Mavis raised her girls, Jolene and LuAnne. Kirby worked as an auditor/insurance examiner from 1946 to 1992. He served the state of Arkansas for twenty years in the accounting and auditorial activities and Chief Examiner for the state insurance department. He was Chief Administrative Officer of NICOA in Minot, ND and finally an independent Certified Financial Examiner of insurance companies. Kirby was proud of his family, serving his country and his career. He was a great storyteller and we will all miss his stories. He was preceded in death by sisters Katherine and Martha Ruth and son Kirby Smith III. Surviving is his wife, Mavis Bakken; son, William “Bill” Smith (Joyce) of Little Rock, Ar ; sisters, Helen Mumby (Bandera, Tx.)& Peggy Hunter (Pensacola, Fl); Stepdaugters, Jolene Hennessy (Denver, Co)& LuAnne Moeller (Garret) of Elk River, Mn.; grandchildren, Matthew & Allison Smith and Jackie & Saundra Moeller. Graveside services were 2:00 p.m. Saturday October 21, Oakland Cemetery Warren, AR. by Frazer’s Funeral Home.
