Col. William Walter Powell U S Army (ret) age 57, of Madison, Alabama formerly of Warren, Arkansas died Saturday, August 6, of injuries suffered in an aircraft accident at Decatur, Alabama. He was born February 13, 1948 at Warren, Arkansas a son of the late Roy Floyd Powell and Nadine Deering Powell. He was a graduate of Warren High School, a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and held a Masters Degree form the Naval War College, Newport Rhode Island. He was a letterman and played 4 years on the Arkansas Razorback Football Team. On graduation from the U of A Fayetteville he accepted a commission in the US Army at the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. After retirement for the Army he worked for Raytheon Corp and L-3 Communications and Simulations. Surviving is his wife Patricia “Trish” Sligh Powell whom he married on July 29, 1966 at Warren, Arkansas; a son William Ian Powell, Arlington, Texas, a sister Manda Green, Montgomery, Texas and his step mother Sadie Powell of Warren, AR. Funeral services were 2:00pm Saturday August 13, at Frazer’s Chapel with Dr. Ron Moseley, Bill Wisener and David Hargis officiating. Janice Sullivan was organist and soloist was Jim Wheeler. Burial with full military honors was in Shady Grove Cemetery near New Edinburg by Frazer’s Funeral Home of Warren. Active pallbearers were Tim Reaves, Chuck Reaves, Brent Reaves, Glenn Sligh, Jacob Sligh and Will Reaves. Honorary pallbearers were J.W. Greenwood, Calvin Jones, David Lyon, Wallace McManus, Marlin Raines, Charles Sligh and Whitney Sandifer.
