Betty Jean Callaway Hargis
Funeral Date: 3/23/2011

Betty Jean Callaway Hargis, age 87, of Warren, AR., passed into the presence of the Lord on Sunday, March 20, 2011. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Wallace Callaway and Cora Callaway, and brothers, Wallace Callaway, Jr and James Callaway. Betty is survived by her devoted husband William “Bill” Hargis, Jr of Warren; sister Irene Harrower of Atlanta, Georgia; son William Hargis, III and wife Laurel of Katy, Texas; daughter Carol Isom and husband Gary of Little Rock; and daughter Gretchen Peacock and husband Gary of Sharpsburg, Georgia. Additionally, she is survived by two granddaughters, Christa Gibson and Erin Huff; four grandsons, Matthew Twyford and Caleb, Joshua and Benjamin Peacock; and a number of nieces and nephews. Betty was born in Glenwood on January 22, 1924. She grew up in Murfeesboro in a devoutly Methodist household. The strong faith of her childhood continued to strengthen her throughout her life, especially as she cared for her parents in their final years and for her two brothers, whose health was compromised at an early age. The first and only love of Betty’s life was Bill Hargis. The couple married on September 21, 1943, shortly before Bill’s World War II deployment, where he was wounded in the Normandy invasion. After Bill’s return from the war, the couple set up their home in Warren, where they lived for 67 years. The two were devoted members of Warren’s First Baptist Church. Betty was celebrated throughout her life as a stunning classic beauty, but her inner grace far exceeded her physical charms. She was a compassionate and wise woman; a loyal daughter, mother, sister and grandmother with an infectious laugh that cheered those around her. In her last years, though her health was poor, friends and caregivers were still drawn to Betty’s sweet spirit. She was adored by many, but none more than her husband, Bill, who loves to talk of how he met the most beautiful girl at Henderson College and of all of their happy years spent as one. Their life together is the stuff of which novels are written. As this chapter ends in Betty’s life, their love story continues. Though Bill and Betty could never imagine their lives without one another, in the end, whether or not they leave this world together is not nearly as important as the fact that they lived as loving partners, and shining examples of grace and devotion. Betty’s legacy of love means that her story really will have no end. She will be loved and greatly missed by all who knew her. A Little Rock memorial service was held Wednesday March 23, at 10:00 a.m at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church with Dr. Jeff Hamoton, Dr.. Glenn H. Morgan and Rev. Lynn W. Lindsey officiating. Organist were James Maase, Trevin Young and James Maase sang. Graveside services were in Oakland Cemetery at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday by Frazer’s Funeral Home. Active pallbearers were Jeremy Huff, Matthew Twyford, Caleb Peacock, Joshua Peacock, Benjamin Peacock, Gary Isom and Gary Peacock. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Arkansas Hospice Foundation, 14 Parkstone Circle, North Little Rock, 72116 and Alzheimer’s Association- Oklahoma/Arkansas Chapter, 6465 South Yale Avenue, Suite 312, Tulsa, OK 74136-7810.

Message: To the Hargis family: A sweet lady was welcomed into Heaven. She was a fine lady and a friend to all of Warren. You all are in my prayers.

Name: John Callaway
Message: She was a sweetheart and I'm kicking my own butt because I knew her health had been failing for some time and I told myself on several occasions that I needed to hop in my old truck and drive to Warren for one last visit. Of course I never did and there was absolutely no excuse for not having done so. I guess a deep seated fear that she wouldn't know or recognize me was my rationale for not going and I wanted to remember her as the prettiest, wittiest, and most charming lady I have ever known. Case now closed!! I'll miss her dearly but I'm not overly distraught in her passing because I know she is elated about the future she'll be sharing with her heavenly father for eternity. I hope the good Lord appreciates her sense of humor and infectious laughter as much as I did !! I love you Betty Jean Callaway Hargis !! Save me a seat if you don't mind. Cuz Johnny Labuan, Malaysia
